The topic of food intolerances is being more widely spoken about across the globe, with many people now acknowledging things such as gluten intolerances by offering ‘Free From’ products. Intolerances are typically associated with symptoms like bloating, stomach pains, nausea and digestive issues including IBS. But what many people don’t know, is that there is a link between food intolerances and skin irritations such as eczema.
According to the Irish Skincare Foundation, eczema affects one in five children in Ireland and about one in 12 adults. It can be a year-round torment, or it can flare up in the cold months. Which leaves us wondering exactly how many of those people know that their symptoms could potentially be changed by making simple tweaks to their diet.
What is Eczema?
Typical symptoms of eczema include dry skin, which can become itchy and inflamed, and even potentially becoming blistered and infected. It can have a huge impact on a person’s quality of life, leaving them with a low self-esteem and feelings of depression and anxiety.
Although there are lots of creams and ointments on the market aimed at relieving the symptoms, the biggest change of all could happen by finding out if there is a food at the root of the problem.
The foods that are most often linked to food allergies are: Eggs, Milk, Wheat, Soy, Tree nuts, Fish and Peanuts.
Getting Answers
If you think you may be starting to show signs of eczema, then we advise you to seek advice from your GP in the first instance.
However, if you have been suffering with eczema for a while and you are looking for answers to the problem, then an intolerance test could give you those answers. By using a sample of your hair (around 5 strands), Allergy Test Ireland will test this in our labs against up to 600 food and non-food items. You will receive a comprehensive report of your results which will highlight exactly which items you are intolerant to. By eliminating these items from your diet, you may also be eliminating symptoms of eczema for good and start to see a change in your skin.
